- A €280 million contract

The teams working for the joint venture(1) led by VINCI subsidiaries VINCI Construction and VINCI Energies have handed over the new Koutio Médipôle hospital complex in Nouméa to the government of New Caledonia. The Médipôle project, the largest ever carried out in New Caledonia and in the Pacific region, brings together at a single site the facilities of the hospital centre (CHT) that were previously spread over four different locations.

The construction of New Caledonia’s largest-ever public building confirms VINCI’s expertise in the hospital sector and its ability to carry out projects overseas. The €280 million works contract awarded to VINCI was completed within a very short four-year timeframe.

New Caledonia’s hospital centre now brought together at a single site

Previously spread across four sites in Greater Nouméa, the New Caledonia hospital facilities have now been brought together at a 15-hectare site in the coastal municipality of Dumbéa sur Mer on the outskirts of Nouméa. The Médipôle will initially comprise the hospital, the ATIR association for the treatment of renal insufficiency, a radiotherapy unit, the New Caledonia Pasteur Institute and a cancer treatment centre. The 82,000 m2 facility has 12 operating theatres and a total of 450 rooms with 650 beds.

The new hospital complex will cover more than half of New Caledonia’s health care requirements and is structurally designed to accommodate alterations and expansion to meet future health care needs. The project is the region’s first public facility to achieve High Environmental Quality certification.

An ambitious construction schedule and efficient organisation

The joint venture brought the full range of its expertise to the project in order to meet the technical and logistical challenges and coordinate the teams in Mainland France and New Caledonia.

VINCI Construction and VINCI Energies set up a specific organisation to manage the difficulties inherent in hospital construction as well as those relating to the nature and location of this project conducted on the other side of the world. The keys to the success of the project were anticipation and cooperation between the teams in mainland France and in New Caledonia.

In terms of logistics, for example, to cope with the 22,000 km distance between the site and Mainland France, all stages of the process and all orders were handled nearly a year ahead of time.

The VINCI Construction and VINCI Energies teams brought in the minimum amount of equipment required and relied on their local partners to procure the resources needed for the worksite.

To foster local employment and develop local skills, the teams also set up a training centre to transfer a number of skills not previously available in New Caledonia and above all to ensure that the worksite was carried out with exemplary attention to safety.

With 800 people working on the project at peak activity, it was handed over in 48 months, a short period of time for a hospital complex of this size.
