Sliding a bridge on the HS2 worksite

On the HS2 railway line project in the UK, Freyssinet (VINCI Construction) has ensured the success of a major new stage, between Coventry and Leamington Spa.

The railway track was temporarily closed for the installation of the HS2 Coventry Bridge, a massive structure weighing 5,600 t and 46 m in length. Thanks to Freyssinet’s Autoripage® (structure sliding) technique, the bridge was slid into position in just 5 h 30 min, thus minimising disruption. Completed 27 h ahead of schedule, the operation involved removing 113 m of track and 188 railway sleepers, and excavating 15,000 m³ of soil. After the slide, the area was backfilled in preparation for reopening the track to traffic. This new bridge will enable the HS2 high-speed line to pass beneath the existing railway line.
