Blythe Construction (Eurovia) completed refurbishment works on a section of Interstate 77 in Charlotte, in North Carolina, in early November 2017. The I/77, some 1,000 km in length, links the states of Ohio and South Carolina.

Blythe was working on the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s project C203869 Mecklenburg County I/77, on an 8.8 km-long, 2x3-lane section between South Carolina Line and West Tyvola Rd.

All works were carried out at night in order to limit disruption for users – this is one of the busiest roads in Mecklenburg County, which has about one million inhabitants. This road serves the south of the city of Charlotte, the largest in the state.

The project involved resurfacing the pavements (road and bridges), for which Blythe used more than 62,000 t of asphalt, including 13,000 t of ultrathin asphalt, but also the reconditioning of the steel elements on the lower parts of the bridges, which contain the retention tanks. And the weathering steel of seven bridges was sandblasted, cleaned and painted. All expansion joints and foam joints in the bridge decks were replaced. The final operation involved installing scraping-resistant thermoplastic road markings.
