Construction of the Shieldhall tunnel in Glasgow

1 October 2014 - New contracts - United Kingdom

VINCI Construction Grands Projets, in a 50/50 joint venture with Costain, is to build the Shieldhall tunnel in Glasgow for Scottish Water, the publicly owned water company in Scotland. The structure, the largest wastewater storage tunnel in Scotland, is designed to improve water quality and help combat the risk of flooding in the city and pollution of the River Clyde. Valued at €105 million, the contract covers the construction of two shafts (diameter: 15 m; depth: 20 m), a 300 m-long cut-and-cover tunnel and a 5 km tunnel with an internal diameter of 4.70 m. The technique used will be that of a mud pressure type tunnel boring machine, one of the company's areas of expertise.
The works start in October 2014, with handover scheduled for early 2018.
