9 June 2016 - Events - France

To respond to organisation of the UEFA Euro 2016 championship and equip the host cities with high-quality sports and festive venues for decades to come, France has built a new generation of stadiums. Three new stadiums hosting the competition were built by VINCI. Many innovations were introduced around these projects in terms of construction, sustainable development, urban marketing and new business activities.

For these three new stadiums, the Group has contributed all the expertise of its integrated design, finance, construction and operation model. VINCI benefits from solid experience in the field of stadiums in France and Europe, with the Stade de France no doubt its most emblematic project. After participating in design, financing and construction of the stadium, VINCI is today the majority shareholder in the Consortium Stade de France, which will be responsible for its operation and maintenance until 2025.

The Stade de France will obviously play a starring role during Euro 2016, with eight matches scheduled: the opening match for the France team on 10 June 2016, three pool matches, one 1/16 match, one quarter-final, one semi-final and the final on 10 July 2016.

In addition, VINCI built the MMArena in Le Mans (which the Group will be operating until 2044), the Valenciennes stadium, Nungesser II, and the Le Havre Stade Océane. VINCI has also been chosen to built the Arena 92 (work now in progress), a multimodal stadium in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine) at the foot of the Arche de la Défense. It is designed to host the Racing Métro 92 rugby matches but also shows, concerts and conferences. In Turkey, VINCI built the Ataturk Istanbul Olympic stadium, delivered in 2001. In the UK, the Group was chosen by E20 Stadium LLP (composed of London Legacy Development Corporation and the London Borough of Newham) to operate and develop the activity of the London Olympic Stadium, located in the heart of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

How do you build a stadium? Example: the Grand Stade de Lyon

VINCI Construction France is building the Stade des Lumières in Lyon for football club Olympique Lyonnais.

The stadium should be inaugurated in early 2016. In the meantime, it has moved through several construction stages.

To carry out this exceptional project, civil engineering and construction companies in the Rhône-Alpes region brought their know-how together in the ad-hoc STADE DE LYON Construction partnership. VINCI Energies and Eurovia companies are also working on the stadium project. Almost 1,000 people are employed on the site every day, including 800 workers representing all trades. After the masonry teams, the carpentry Ou structural frame? and technical works package teams are taking over.
Furthermore, so far almost 150,000 hours of work has been performed by people on work-integration schemes.

The Stade des Lumières is an eco-responsible project that will meet all the requirements imposed by the surrounding ecosystem: energy savings, water and waste management, minimising disturbances and providing work-integration jobs for people in difficulty.
