Installing a pipe on a cliffside

Sudeau and the community authorities in the south of Reunion Island (CASUD) have awarded Sogea Réunion (VINCI Construction Dom-Tom) the contract to replace a 1,100 m-long section of the Pont du Diable penstock pipe.

Launched in March 2016 and with handover scheduled for December, the works involve stabilising the cliff and supplementary earthworks, supplying and installing a 400 diameter steel pipe, providing a covering protective layer of reinforced concrete in areas at risk of landslides, the removal of the existing pipe and connecting up and commissioning the new one.

This out-of-the ordinary cliffside project requires all the skills of Sogea Réunion’s rope access technicians and the use of safety harnesses, lifelines and helicopters to get the pipe in position.
