« Splendour of the powers close to France »: past mistakes in placement of the canvas

While cleaning the paintings on marouflaged canvas, the restorers noticed that certain sections of canvas had been incorrectly placed during previous restoration work. One glaring instance of this is the sky above the three figures personifying Spain, Germany and Holland. The restorers intend to integrate the pictorial elements appropriately, so as to fill gaps and reduce the present impact of such errors on the clarity of the composition.
